The Red Sands Forts

The Maunsell sea forts, built in the Thames estuary during the Second World War and operated by the Royal Navy, were intended to deter and report German air raids using the Thames as a landmark, and attempts to lay mines by aircraft in this important shipping channel. The design of these concrete structures is equal to a military grade bunker, due to the ends of the underwater stilts that are solidly locked into the ground. It is possible to reach them by boat as I have done several times - an unforgettable experience which is both awesome and disturbing.
